Managed Discretionary Accounts – Purchase of WBC and Market Update
Posted on May 7, 2011 by williamshaw
On Friday we made a purchase in Westpac Bank, which is paying a fully franked dividend in three weeks’ time. WBC reported a solid cash profit increase of 7% on the 4th of May, backed up by a dividend increase of 17% to 74c per share. This leaves WBC trading on a PE of 11.5 times. From our previous sell level, we have purchased WBC 50c cheaper and we expect to be holding the stock through the dividend period. Continue reading »

Managed Discretionary Accounts – Sale of BHP
Posted on April 12, 2011 by williamshaw
Yesterday we sold our managed accounts holding in BHP after a Woodside announcement that effectively ended speculation that BHP was ‘eyeing’ it for a takeover. Once that announcement was made, BHP saw some very aggressive short covering, which sent the share price near all-time highs, and peaking at $49.81. Our sale price at $49.51 represents an 11.9% gross gain in just four weeks and added 1.9% to the value of the overall portfolio. Continue reading »

Managed Accounts – Purchase of ANZ
Posted on March 16, 2011 by williamshaw
Wednesday’s purchase of ANZ came a few weeks after the quarterly report shed light on the quality of the underlying business. The company is seven weeks away from going ex-dividend, which if paid while we are holding will further reduce our effective entry into the stock to well under $22.00 per share. Continue reading »

Managed Discretionary Accounts – Sale of BHP and Purchase of WBC
Posted on October 11, 2010 by williamshaw
With approximately 16% of the account in BHP, the investment returned (including dividend) a gross profit of $3.50 or a 1.48% gain on the overall portfolio in six weeks. BHP had run back up to near highs since the purchase date in the face of a rising Australian Dollar and the continued uncertainty around their bid for Potash of Saskatchewan. Overall BHP reached our target profit of 10% and as it was nearing the top of its current trading range we decided it was a good idea to take the profit. Continue reading »

We’ve gone completely ‘off model’
Posted on August 26, 2010 by williamshaw
While meeting with a marketing agency last week I was asked to explain what was different about the way we invest. What is our ‘key point of difference’ compared to, say, your average managed fund. By far the most significant difference is that we don’t use a model portfolio. In this way we also differentiate ourselves from the majority of IMA’s and SMAs (Individually and separately managed accounts) because they also all use model portfolios. Continue reading »
